Hi Jon, great HDR look! Where can we find that Rochester LUT ?
You can find it in DaVinci Resolve 19 (ResolveFX).

Great work . May i know more about lens. Are they full frame ?
Thanks. They’re super35.
@@JonPais Thank you for replying. EF mount ? I am thinking to buy, would you recommend ?
@taraksidhartha7260 They’re nice lenses - too many options to choose from these days! If you might be purchasing a full frame camera in the future, you might also consider full frame lenses. They’re EF mount.

Wow! What did you think of it?
Of course, I love the image quality I’m seeing. Unlike a lot of the stuff I see, the couple of clips I downloaded were perfectly exposed (ie, not underexposed). The ARRI REVEAL color science workflow in DaVinci Resolve is baby simple (it’s already been added to my HDR guide). There are dozens of nice log-to-log LOOKs available, meaning they can all be used in an HDR workflow.
Love it Sir. Thanks 👍🏾
I'm starting my first film this summer. You give great advice, but I'd rather leave it to the pros. I'm really looking forward to working with you on it. If you're interested. 🎞️

This is so incredible helpful thank you so much sir!
You're very welcome!
looks great! Did you buy the a7s3 again?
No, I was just playing around with some old clips.
WAS THE RED THE KOMODO?
The original footage is 8K, so not the Komodo.
nice footage, which red camera do you know?
I’m afraid they don’t say and the metadata’s not telling me anything either.
Is there a different setting you use to get this to work on Instagram? It works great for me on RUclips, but no matter how many times I try I can't get it to work on Instagram, it just end up horribly flat and washed out. Raw iPhone clips shot in HDR work fine, but anything exported from Resolve in HDR or even Final Cut Pro X in HDR refuses to work for me.
Yeah, it won’t work on IG Reels.
Have you tried or had better results disabling the “Camera LUT” in compressor, making a custom preset, so you can do any form of color grading before the color space transform in Resolve?
I tried without camera LUT a long while back but don’t know how to make a custom preset and it didn’t work for me at all. However, when I quickly swipe back and forth between ProRes RAW in FCP and ProRes 4444 in Resolve on my MacBook Pro, they look nearly identical to my eyes. I’ve shared a couple comparison videos of ProRes RAW and ProRes 4444 (I believe they were both in FCP), and it was impossible for me to tell them apart.
Looks very good, and i like the lens too, sharp and nice bokeh!
Which reference monitor do you currently use? What do you think about using the new iPad Pro Ultra Retina XDR display as a reference monitor for HDR?
Hi, Dominic. I’m currently using a MacBook Pro and Sony A95L. I don’t know much about the new iPad Pros, but tablets are kind of small for grading.
@@JonPais Yea, I know but I'm looking for a small reference monitor since I travel often.
Just FYI for anyone: that "RAW Converter" utility that's on the Windows & macOS app stores in my experience messes with the colors and presents them wrong. I think it ignores or re-writes a bit of metadata about the color primaries of the bayer filters or something, not quite sure. Utilities like Assimilate Scratch (or Play Pro Studio), Final Cut, and Adobe stuff (such as media converter) all seem to handle ProRes RAW correctly. The cDNG files converted with Assimilate look correct in Resolve, but the cDNGs from that free app store utility looked wrong for some reason.
I dont think he uses RAW Converter, if i remember correctly he once said that Play Pro Studio is the way to go. And as far as i know the RAW Converter software ain't free!
@@AexoeroV For sure. I just intended for anyone researching content like this. Play Pro Studio is nice indeed.
are you using the drop in filters?
Yes! Kolari drop-in NDs.
@@JonPais Thank you sir
Why not use ACES?
The answer is in the Monster guide^^ daejeonchronicles.com/2021/03/02/comprehensive-workflow-sony-a7s-iii-s-log3-hdr-10-in-davinci-resolve-studio-17-part-i/
@@JonPais I've read it before but forgot that part. I usually just edit HDR in ACEScc and it gives me the best results. Since I shoot in 14bit RAW it does the IDT automatically. Best results I've ever gotten even though i'm using a single camera. By the way I have to seriously thank you. Your blog and videos finally taught me so much about color grading in HDR and now i've mastered my first paid job in HDR and it looks phenomenal! It's a much much bigger leap in image quality than 4k is
Great to hear!
I do 3:1 or 4:1 minimum on my Gemini because for have the Video with Max details when she is done.

@@JonPais The Video 😋
Recording of Sony Bravia A95L for an upcoming blog post about an as yet unrealized benefit of ultra high definition TV.
Welcome to the QD-OLED community. They're absolutely the BEST. It's a shame Sony is moving away from them
Most colorists (the person on a post producito facility, that delivers the color and ultimate brightness and contrast to an image) work on monitors that deliver about 1000 nits (git or take 100 nits). This is a conundrum since images appear bright and with correct levels of blacks at these professional monitors. SO HDR is still a no mans land when delivering these pictures (shows, movies) to the final viewer since there are so many TVs that are selling as HDR which are not capable of reaching 700 nits at tops. This is frustrating for the viewer and also creatives porducing this images. So... what are the point on HDR after all?
I'm in total disbelief over your footage and especially the GH4 ones. Now I understand why your komodo footage looks so good
I want to ask something. When grading in HDR, does the raw image out the camera automatically tonemap to HDR levels 0-1000 using ACES 1.3 in Resolve? Davinci YRGB Color management does tonemap my RAW DNG to HDR levels, but ACES doesn't. Is this normal?
In ACES, set the output transform to 1,000 nits and you’re good to go.
@@JonPais you mean in the project settings? As in Rec2020 ST2084 1000nits (P3 limited)
@@shueibdahir Yes, on the Color Management page.
@@JonPais is there a post on your blog about grading HDR in a technically correct way and examples to series/movies that were correctly done. I'd like to see good references so I can integrate that knowledge into my grading. I've just now become very comfortable in my ability to grade SDR but find that the dynamic range is very limiting, especially with Linear RAW.
@@JonPais I just implement what you told me and took a few tips from your blog on HDR and oh my god I'm blown away. I also figured out that RUclips can actually interpret HDR10+ metadata and use the analysis you did in Davinci Resolve to tone map it to SDR. It looks almost exactly the same as the HDR version, preserving the creative intent but with less dynamic range.
I'd love ur take. Pro/cons etc.. Based on ur videos it seems u appreciate mostly the Pro's. I'd say u know how proper HDR is wonderful thing when implemted well.. But I'm curious of both pro's & cons. 👍
HDR is a beautiful new tool for the trade. When used properly & with natural & well chosen intent of the user(s) to convey moment(s) in PQ , whether that's an emotion, more dynamic representation of the light in a scene or on an object.. Perhaps convey the beauty of nature or wow a person with magical effects. Its not forced & should be taken out of the toolbox & played with & put to use at the right time..as often as desired. Perhaps a studio will force u to make an HDR version of ur creation. Hopefully u can share ur SDR version or lower brightness version but that's on case by case basis up to all parties involved. Definitely can't understand hating it. If not forced on you & u can choose max nit level, all should be just fine & hopefully even more impactful .. Even if very slightly. Definitely watched poor HDR & that can be distracting.. But when u video done right it's wonderful. Its still new technology & it's worth the bad HDR for a future of amazing HDR. That's just for general home viewing not mention all the benefits it has outside the home.
ive never used a red... Can the Komodo do beauty natural colors? Everytime I think of this footage I remember the colors being tan, green yellow or neutral looking.
I'm quite confused here. I don't understand the issue with any creative person being able to make the image look exactly the way they want. That is literally the point of being a cinematographer, and acting as if these quotes are to be mocked as uninformed is a bit rude. Yes studios & distributors sometimes make dumb decisions, but to pretend these folks don't have a valid stake in the game is also a bit cynical. I'm all for 1:1 realism no tone mapped HDR in cases where it's appropriate (there's some beautiful HDR tours of Tokyo on RUclips that go well over 1,000 nits reference!) and I'm sure VR applications could use it as well. But just like how high framerates aren't always better, higher number contrast ratio isn't always better either. We're trying to make art, not a matrix you jack into. (Sometimes we are trying to make that though!) I just watched "Tales From The Loop" the other day, a series carefully filmed to look like a hand painted picture book by the famous sci fi artist who wrote it. The HDR was subtle, and it was gorgeous. The way an image is formed to represent a memory, or idea, or story is a critical part of this creative process. "Creative intent" must be maintained, whether people use it to make movies you like the look of or not.
1) "For eons, as a species, we've been obsessed with taking real world high dynamic range scenes and reproducing them on low dynamic range display devices." False. The human race has never been obsessed with reproducing reality on low dynamic range display devices any more than composers were obsessed with writing music for early keyboard instruments with only a few octaves and no ability to vary the volume. If they did so, it's because that's all that was available at the time. 2) HDR will "kill your retinas." Categorically false. 3: “The only line that can be drawn objectively is SDR’s 100 nits. Anything above that in principle is HDR.” False. “[O]ne essential part of HDR is to render highlights, such as specular reflections, in images above the diffuse white level.” - Kenichiro Masaoka, NHK, inventor of Rec.2020. Because of the logarithmic nature of the human visual system, those pixels need to be at least 3-5X brighter than diffuse white in order to be perceived as highlights. 4) "HDR is about shadows and all the nuances we can now play with thanks to the extra bits available." False. What makes a night-time image, or any picture in which dark regions predominate, an HDR image rather than merely a dark SDR image, is that there are also very bright pixels. 5) “When discussing the dos and don’ts of HDR, I would advise not placing actors in front of windows as the extra brightness that can be seen in the sky might make the actor appear less visible.” Bad advice. All of the very best HDR movies and television series have scenes where actors are sitting, standing or walking in front of very bright windows. And those are often some of the most powerful scenes. 6) “A few years back, a couple of years back, the consensus really was that HDR doesn’t affect anybody: you don’t have to shoot differently, you don’t have to edit differently; it’s really just an extra step in the grading. And I think over the last couple of years, we’ve really learned a lot and we’re still learning, so we’re not there yet, but we’re still learning; but in theory, it doesn’t really doesn’t change anything but the grading pass”. Categorically false. 7) “HDR is just a standard. HDR doesn’t have any creative implication or aesthetic implication. It’s just a standard.” False. HDR is an entirely new format opening up boundless expressive opportunities. 8) “When high dynamic range first came out, every studio wanted… ‘We want our high dynamic range version of this show to like, you know, go up to 11 and hurt people!’" Demonstrably false. 9) “If you buy a flatscreen [TV] from the Box and you plug it in, it's scary, because the whites are about 10,000 nits and it doesn't look anything like what you wanted.” False. All studios use consumer grade televisions as client reference displays.
@@JonPais ahh I understand what you’re getting at, though personally I don’t think it’s worth getting too worked up over it. If a show looks good or bad it typically has to do with a lot more than just one person with one good or lousy/misinformed opinion. Usually comes all the way from the top. I feel bad for some of these creators that have to work under the stress of big brand execs.
Why do you feel bad for them? Streamers will never force filmmakers to make the contrast of the image higher than they’re comfortable with.
